Facilities & Services (F&S) provides physical plant, operational, and essential services for sustaining an environment that fosters the research, teaching, and public engagement activities of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The organization employs approximately 1,200 dedicated men and women serving in both Civil Service and Academic Professional positions. The F&S goal is to support the university's education, research, and outreach missions by improving the physical condition of the facilities and grounds, reducing energy consumption through education and use of renewables, and increasing customer satisfaction by providing quality services in a responsive, reliable, and customer-focused manner.

The Customer Relations & Communications (CRC) department in F&S seeks a full time Visiting Media Communications Specialist. The department is responsible for managing campus customer relations and for providing internal/external communications for the organization.

The Visiting Media Communications Specialist will be responsible for creating, designing, writing, editing, and producing F&S multimedia for organizational and campus distribution methods and platforms. The Visiting Media Communications Specialist reports to the Manager of Communications & External Relations who reports to the Associate Director of Customer Relations & Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles of F&S.
  • Work closely with the Manager of Communications and External Relations and Associate Director of Customer Relations and Communications to develop original content as part of F&S strategic communications
  • Tell the organizational story by adapting materials for traditional and new media
  • Create design and imagery for print and digital media consistent with unit and campus identity standards through layout of art and copy with regards to arrangement, size, type and style, and aesthetics
  • Use design programs/software to execute print and digital graphic production
  • Conceptualize, write, and produce materials focused on campus capital improvement projects and related processes in collaboration with F&S' Capital Programs Division
  • Respond to media inquiries and informational requests from campus units
  • Foster opportunities for media and academic/administrative unit coverage through proactive methods
  • Support and document F&S activities that facilitate engagement with the campus community
  • Contribute to and participate in the creative process as an innovative and enthusiastic member of the F&S communications team
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, advertising, public relations, graphic design, or a related field
  • Proven proficiency in design software, including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Experience with web development/content management systems and digital storytelling
  • Ability to work independently and meet quick deadlines
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

A minimum of two years' experience in communications, journalism, marketing, advertising, public relations, graphic design, or a related field is preferred.

The Visiting Media Communications Specialist is a full-time, benefits-eligible Academic Professional position. Anticipated start date is as soon as possible following the closing date. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position may become non­-visiting at a later date.
