Facilities & Services (F&S) provides physical plant, operational, and essential services for sustaining an environment that fosters the research, teaching, and public engagement activities of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The organization employs approximately 1,200 dedicated men and women serving in both Civil Service and Academic Professional positions. The F&S goal is to support the university's education, research, and outreach missions by improving the physical condition of the facilities and grounds, reducing energy consumption through education and use of renewables, and increasing customer satisfaction by providing quality services in a responsive, reliable, and customer-focused manner.

The Customer Relations & Communications department in F&S seeks a full-time Academic Hourly Customer Relations Specialist. The position reports to the Director of Customer Relations & Communications who reports to the Executive Director of Facilities & Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Mission, Vision, Values, and Guiding Principles of F&S
  • Work closely with the Director of Customer Relations & Communications to develop campus customer communications
  • Facilitate complaint resolution services for campus customers
  • Coordinate training and informal sessions for campus customers
  • Develop and manage formal customer survey efforts/feedback mechanisms
  • Assist with the coordination of outreach events including facility liaison meetings, customer forums and open houses
  • Develop and/ or edit original content as part of F&S strategic communications
  • Participate in other departmental projects and special assignments as requested

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, general business, marketing, advertising, or a related field
  • Excellent oral and written interpersonal skills
  • Problem solver
  • Professional demeanor with an ability to keep calm under pressure
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and implement projects
  • One year of work experience


  • Minimum of two years' experience in a customer service position
  • Social media account management and strategy development
  • Copy editing background
  • Familiarity with facilities management and/ or construction industries
