Campus Master Plan Update

In January 2016, the Urbana campus began an 18-month process to update the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Campus Master Plan. The master plan guides the development, renovation, and repurposing of facilities and spaces on campus.

Final Campus Master Plan Update documents are available on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Master Planning webpage or the Campus Master Plan Interactive Website. The files include the:

  • Technical Report
  • Executive Summary
  • Final Public Forum Presentation

The goal of the Campus Master Plan Update was to create a plan that provides a campus environment that supports our learning, discovery and outreach missions while serving as an example of sustainability and enriching our diverse communities and neighborhoods.

The plan will help to align the ongoing development of physical campus spaces with academic plans and programs. It will provide a series of recommendations focused on enhancing the student experience, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthening campus organization, and improving operational efficiency to position Illinois for a strong future as the pre-eminent public research university.

Engagement and Schedule

Student, neighbor, faculty, staff, alum, city resident, or just individuals interested in the Urbana campus had the opportunity to shape the future of Illinois by participating in the master planning process. The input received from University leadership, campus constituents, and community members throughout the process to shape the plan.

The Campus Master Plan Update was organized around four primary phases: Discovery, Analysis, Master Planning, and Documentation. The master planning process is intended to be strategic, data-informed, iterative, and inclusive.
